Having grown up with the Grandma-given nickname, “Milo-Bug,” ladybugs have always had a calming, peaceful, and lucky presence to me. The name "ladybug" comes from a European legend that farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary to save their crops from aphids. When the Virgin Mary answered their prayers by sending ladybugs to eat the aphids, the farmers named the bugs, "Our Lady's Beetles.”

While we view the gentle ladybug’s vibrant red, black, and white coloration as lucky, predators and prey view them as a warning signal.

False white eyes make them seem larger while the loud red and black coloration screams to predators that the ladybug does not taste good.

While the ladybug is not seen as traditionally scary to most, peaceful can be intimidating.
